Vehicle calculated average 17.6 mpg. Manually calculated 17.6 mpg. The computer was exact.

I think the MPG calculators in teh cars are getting better. my last tank of gas the dash said 27.4 and the manual calculation was 27.43, so close enough...

I never look at that thing, I mean I don't even care about it, I just look at the fuel gauge, if it's low I fill it up. What am I missing? Should I pay attention to it?

It can tell you if something is wrong, for one. My car was averaging about 18-20mpg, then suddenly the average went down to about 10. Turns out it started running super rich due to an intake leak. But the leak didn't show up when we pulled the codes. So it can be helpful.

Ah! Fair enough. My current vehicle is the first one I've had with a readout, I was initially happy to have another gadget but as my vehicle goes off road, in low range(a lot), the readout spikes so it just got annoying trying to keep the numbers low and I gave up paying any attention to it. What you say makes sense though. Thanks for the reply.

I don't get how those computers are ever inaccurate. It seems like such a simple calculation.
